Home Economics

Five a day

The Curriculum

The central focus of Home Economics at Key Stage 3 is the consideration of home and family in relation to the development of the individual and society. The programme of study is designed to enable pupils to acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills to make informed decisions which may improve the quality of life for themselves and others.

In Fleming Fulton we place a greater emphasis on life and living skills, and incorporate many practical food lessons, where the pupils are encouraged to acquire a good range of basic practical skills, with or without assistance. The development of these skills will relate to the choice, preparation and presentation of food.

Exams and Qualifications

All Secondary classes follow the NI Home Economics curriculum, with a degree of adaptation to allow for differentiation. Also schemes are drawn up to incorporate more practical-based lessons to encourage independent living skills, where possible.

Year 10 will begin with a focus on diet and health, as we annually enter the Young Cook of the Year Competition, through which we can boast a long list of successes, indeed Gary Quantrill took the 2010 title, earning prizes of £100 for himself and £250 for the department.

Young Cook Awards

Year 11 pupils will study for and sit the CIEH 'Certificate of Food Hygiene', a recognised qualification which is essential for students with an interest in ANY aspect of the catering industry.

Post-16 students are offered GCSE Home Economics, and we are delighted with this years’ grades of a C and an E.

Post-16 Support classes are offered various certificate courses by AQA and CCEA, ranging from 'Prepare Food', 'Keeping Safe', ‘Emotional Wellbeing' and ‘Healthy Lifestyles.  The latest course being run in the HE department is a CEA Level 1 Award in Creative Crafts (with a focus on cake decorating).

K4 pupils complete the Sainsbury’s ‘Active Kids Get Cooking Awards’, working through from Bronze to Gold Awards.
