AAC Support Class

AAC (Alternative, Augmentative Communication) Secondary Support class offers a variety of strategies and communication systems to students with communication difficulties. Students develop the most appropriate combinations to maximize their communication skills and access the revised N. Ireland curriculum.
Over recent years the following systems have been accessed by our students: PCS (Picture Communication Symbols), Rebus/Widgit symbols, Makaton signing, eye pointing, vocalisations, use of gestures, finger spelling and word / number grids.
Students are introduced to the most appropriate types of assistive technology, ranging from single switches to high tech communication aids. A key factor is to enable the students to interact with technology and their environment irrespective of disability.
Students work at their own levels and pace. They link with other secondary students for subjects i.e. Music, Home Economics, XL Transition Programme and follow various accreditation and qualification schemes. Part of their revised curriculum work is to run a school based horticultural mini enterprise, “The Sunflower Company”.
The class enjoys a three day residential each year and goes on numerous educational visits to support and follow up the work and activities in the classroom.
