Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy is the assessment and treatment of the child's motor, sensory, perceptual, psychological and social functioning through purposeful activity and play. The Occupational Therapist aims to maximise the child's potential and level of independence in the areas of self care, school/work and leisure activities, in preparation for reaching full potential in adult life. Advice is also given in school and home to ease daily management.

The Occupational Therapists are employed by Greenpark Healthcare Trust, but work entirely within the school.

Staff work within the multidisciplinary team and offer treatment to the Nursery, Primary, and Secondary schools. Treatment can be organised on an individual or groups basis.

Staff work closely with Community O.T.s often arranging joint home visits to discuss provision of equipment and house adaptations.

Areas of assessment and treatment include:

  • Fine & Gross motor skills
  • Sensory skill development
  • Seating & posture
  • Upper limb & hand function
  • Upper limb splinting
  • Computer access & switch use
  • Perceptual & cognitive skills
  • Activites of daily living
  • Wheelchair skills training
  • Community & vocational skills training
  • Home liaison

The O.T. department accept basic grade O.T.s on a yearly rotation to offer specialist training. We also offer clinical placements for O.T. students from the University of Ulster.

The multidisciplinary team are involved in a "Working with children with disabilities" module for Medical Students from Queens University.
