Nurses

The nursing department consists of a nurse and a senior health care assistant. The nurses are responsible for the health of all the children in school.

This entails:-

  1. Assisting children with intermittent catheterization.
  2. Health promotion.
  3. Administering medication. All medicines and drugs needed by children in school must be given only by the nurses. Any changes or relevant information regarding drugs or treatments must be reported to the nurses as soon as possible.
  4. In the event of any pupil being taken ill during the school day, the nurses MUST be notified at once, and will be responsible for dealing with the situation.

Incoming phones calls and letters regarding health matters should be directed to the nurses in the first instance.

All pupils going on day outings or holidays should be discussed with the nurses, because of the need for regular medicines to be given while out. Advice and emergency procedures for individual children will also be given.

The nurses liaise with the Spina Bifida Clinic and the Neuro Surgery departments of the Royal Victoria Hospital as necessary.

The school nurses work closely with parents, GPs, consultants, health visitors and district nurses.

  1. All pupils are offered a health appraisal once per year. This will continue upon appointment of a Consultant Paediatrician.
  2. Vision testings are done routinely and clinics are supported by senior health care assistants.
  3. A full vaccination programme is offered to all children and parents are encouraged to make full use of this .
  4. The dentist comes to run a clinic in the school's own dental surgery once a week and the school nurses liaise on any medical matters
